Organization Networking Made Easy

Immediately after years of networking to win small business and fulfill new contacts I take pleasure in that the believed of attending organization networking activities and conference new men and women to acquire enterprise can be pretty unpleasant for several men and women so they simply just never do it. BUT it does not want to be. Networking is merely about this:

Keep in mind that individuals have 3 elementary psychological demands

To truly feel loved

To come to feel valued and important

To really feel that we belong

So when conference new people today and existing contacts at social and business enterprise networking activities you just require to comply with the… Be, Do, Have formula for results

Be good & be yourself mainly because persons acquire folks. When you are sincere and organic it is considerably much easier for the people today you meet up with to get to know you and establish rapport with you.

Be fascinated & exhibit you treatment by asking more questions about them and their business and interests instead than focusing on your demands and dominating the discussion. We all find out a lot more when we are listening and the other human being feels that they have experienced an pleasant conversation when they feel listened to and that their feeling matters.

Be Sincere due to the fact persons want to sense comfy and build rely on just before they commit to doing the job with you and recommending you to their relatives, friends and business enterprise contacts.

Do support people unconditionally with out leaving them experience that they owe you since a gift (your assist) is appreciated and builds have confidence in and regard when a financial debt (anyone owing you some thing) puts tension and a feeling of burden and inequality onto a partnership.

Do what you say you are likely to do mainly because this is a mark of your integrity and confirms that you indicate what you say.

Do it when you say you will since timing is important when developing believe in and extremely usually you will come across that some matters are time delicate.

Have religion in the electrical power and price of reciprocation – assist initially and you will be aided later for the reason that the a lot more folks you assist and the far more aid you give, the extra people recognize you and worth you. The far more they take pleasure in you, the a lot more they really feel likewise determined to assist you realize success as nicely.

Have patience – be a relationship farmer (sow, feed, tend and harvest) and not a hunter (stalk, find, focus on, shoot and eliminate). Farmers invest time, energy and sources for the long expression and achieve a more substantial return around a more time time period of time. Hunters focus on their prey and have to hold repeating the approach to endure.

Have time for folks – because everybody issues. You by no means know who is familiar with who and you constantly choose folks at your peril. Make time for men and women and communicate to them and about them as you want for them to address you.

6 Steps to Job Search Using Your Networking Contact List

When you are looking for a job, apart from checking the ads in newspapers and specialized job search engines on the internet, you should also ask for information from the people on your network’s contact list.

Your personal contacts can provide you with current information on the company and position vacancies that are not posted in the regular job marketplace. Sometimes, when they do not provide information about the job opening you are looking for, your contacts may be able to refer you to someone else who might be able to provide the information you are looking for about the industry, company or position of interest.

This is an example of what networking is. Networking is when you start reaching out to your list of contacts to get needed information or referrals from your friends’ network of contacts. Many people are repelled by the thought of networking. Some critics of networking believe that is not a reliable as a source of information about industry, companies or job openings. Others say it is easier to keep on with the traditional job market ads than to rely on network of contacts to get the information we need as part of our job hunting efforts.

You may have not notice it, but you are already networking on a daily basis and you just don’t know it. As you go along with your daily chores, you interact with people you know; the hairdresser, the bank’s manager, your neighbors, your friends and family, your coworkers, current and former, classmates and other acquaintances. All these people, that be a potential source of information, leads and contacts for a position if interest. The make your overall networking process easier, here are some basic, but important tips:

  • Make a list of your “warm contacts”

Well, Walt Disney once said the “everything begins with a mouse”. Them it comes to networking, everything begins with a list. We call this list a warm contact list as it includes people that you know and that will either take you call without much hesitation or will get back you as they know who you are. For some people, this may seem as a scary step so, as you become more ease with the process, begin with your family and closest friends and then expand your list to include other acquaintances. Remember that warm contact list includes people that know you and that you interact, compared to a cold contact list that includes people that you didn’t have any contact for a while.

  • Contacting people from your network list

When you reach out to a contact from your network list a warm contact, let them know that you are actively seeking a job. Be candid on what kind of job you are looking for and ask them if they know of job openings in the area of interest you are interested in. By letting you contacts know your preference of type of position, industry and companies of interest, will allow them to help them to provide you quality information, referral or contacts. It is very important to share your contact information with your network, so they can reach you in case they hear of anything. It has been my personal experience that some of my network contacts even asked me for a copy of my resume so that can pass it along their network of contacts, so have an updated resume ready if ask you for it.

  • Do a self-assessment before reaching out to your network

As you over the process of contacting your network, it is likely that they will want to know more about your experience, skill, expectations and job preferences to that that better help you. You should be able to provide this information in a concise manner and to describe what kind of information you might want your contact to provide you..

Many business recruiting and human resources professional suggest that you prepared a short script that you can practice from. They call this script the “elevator speech” or “two minutes speech”, where you can articulate your job expectations and preferences, relevant experience and skills in about two minutes. In case more detail conversation is needed, then a short follow up meeting or call might be needed to go over your resume.

  • Ask your network contacts for referrals

In case the person you are contacting can’t provide you with information you are need for your job search efforts, you can kindly ask for information of at least two people that might be able to help you. Ask if your contact might send an introduction note of call before you call or email the referral.

  • When referred, act upon your referrals immediately

When you are referred to another person, your contact might contact then to introduce you and let them know that you will be contacting them. So keep in touch with your network to know when is a good time to make your move within a few days after you have been referred.

When you call the referred person keep proper business etiquette. When you make the call, introduce yourself and let the person know who referred you and how you are related with your contact. Be straightforward, but polite, in sharing with the person what information you are interested in.

Sometimes, the person you were referred to might call your contact after you call. Therefore, it is good idea to call your contact to share how the call went and, more important, to thank him or her for the referral.

  • Be always available to add value to your network

This is a crucial point. Networking is a two-way street when it comes to add value to one another. As you help your network, your people will more willing to help you by providing information and referrals, when the time comes.

As you gain experience through practice, you will find that networking is not an obscure science, but an interesting, fun and rewarding experience for you “team”. It is also one of the most important tools when it comes to take your career enhancement and overall job search strategies to the next level.

Networking With Tact and Professionalism

Networking is the process of developing strong relationships over time with people who can help you locate information, resources, and other people, to help you locate information, resources and other people. This is accomplished by sharing information, your expertise, your resources and your contacts. Networking is not asking for a job or asking for free services. Most people fail to network with tact and professionalism when they do not realize networking is the process of building familiarity and trust over an extended period of time.

The art of networking has even made it to primetime television. As I sat at home catching up on my TiVo recordings, I thought it would be interesting to incorporate a recent episode of ABC’s “Ugly Betty”. Characters Mark and Amanda provided Betty with tips on how to network at a social event to build her list of “important contacts” to establish her professional reputation in the magazine industry.

Mark and Amanda told Betty networking is gathering information to advance her career by using the following steps:

1. Forge a bond

2. Gather information

3. Perform an exit strategy

They added other information, but for the sake of keeping networking tactful and professional, I decided to omit their definitions and provide my own. When members of your network refer you, they are essentially putting their professional reputation on the line. Establishing yourself as a professional from the very beginning will ensure that your network connections do not hesitate to refer you to others. Let’s look at how to apply these steps in either networking setting.

Social Event

  1. Introduction: Provide your name, where you work, and a mutual bond. This person may not be in your industry, but they may be in the same industry as your best friend or something else’s best friend in your network. This also allows you to learn and connect with someone outside of your normal environment.
  2. Exchange Information: Here is where your listening skills are challenged. Listen with the intent to provide information on how you can help this person. Once you establish a connection, you will be able to get what you need. Keep in mind networking is a two-way street that involves both giving and receiving.
  3. Thank You & Follow up: Thank the person for their time. Ask how you can reach them to follow up with them later. As in the previous step, you want to be able to provide them with information about what you uncovered while listening to them.

  1. Introduction: Provide your name, how you found out about them, and why you are contacting them. Often, I receive request to connect on LinkedIn with nothing attached, other than I want to add you to my professional network. I’m left wondering why they want to connect and how can I help them.
  2. Exchange Information: When networking online, it’s important not to ask for a job or free services. Let the person know why you are interested in them but make sure to include how you can assist them as well. Once I received a one page email that told me more information than I needed to know about a complete stranger. Remember, avoid providing personal details and be mindful of the recipient’s time. How would you feel if you received a one page email from a complete stranger who asked for something and offered nothing in return?
  3. Thank You & Follow up: After receiving information, always thank the person for their time. Be sure to follow up with that person as well. Often times I participate in informational interviews or provide resources and I’m left wondering if the person got the job they interviewed for or if my information was helpful. This allows you to continue building trust and familiarity, but more importantly, it allows you to reconnect with this person again as sharing must be done on a regular basis to build long term relationships.

Implementing the previous steps will ensure you are networking with tact and professionalism. Networking is the number one way to build your career. The last thing you want to do while building your network is to appear unprofessional or non-business like. Keep these three steps in mind as you build your network and enjoy the fruition as you watch your relationships blossom and grow.

Networking at Live Events

Going to live events where your coaches or mentors are giving talks, seminars, courses, or workshops are great places to meet other like-minded individuals who might be potential clients.

I try to go to one live event each year, and I have always found enough leads who were also attending the event that became clients of mine.

The income from those clients more than paid for the investment in traveling and attending the live event.

One way to find events is to get on the mailing lists of the influencers in your industry. Pick ones who have an agenda that will also be beneficial and interesting to you.

You can also Google event calendars for events in your area or other locations that you would like to travel to.

Of course, it will be twice as good if you pick an event where you will be learning something of value for your own business. Then you'll essently be killing two birds with one stone — more knowledge for your business and more leads for your business.

Be sure to take lots of business cards but also have a way to track who you speak with so you can follow up with them after the event.

Lastly, be sure to do your follow up right after the event so people remember who you are.

Many coaches ask me, "Where can I find qualified leads offline?" Here are some tips:

  • Networking Meetings such as BNI, Meet-Up, local entrepreneur groups, Toastmasters, and your local Chamber of Commerce
  • Meetings for International Coaching Federation (ICF) have chapters in all major cities
  • Live events – look for ones that are targeted to your target market
  • Local support groups that are for your ideal client's issues and concerns
  • Have a booth at a local job expo, business exhibition, or other event that draws your ideal prospect
  • Start your own local support or business group and invite the community or send individual invitations to people you know who may qualify as a prospect

New Networking Paradigm

Networking is an opportunity to find people who are in sync with you. But it's about building relationships, not just getting sales. There is a new trend in networking that you should be aware of. The old paradigm was "How can I get their attention? How can I find a new prospect?" The new paradigm is "What does this person want or need? How can I be of service to them? How can I solve their problem?"
